뮤지션이자 사운드 아티스트인 권병준은 최근 다양한 소리를 내는 원리와 도구들을 연구하면서 사운드 작업을 지속해오고 있다. 권병준은 90년대 초반 싱어송라이터로 음악을 시작하여 얼터너티브 록에서부터 미니멀 하우스를 포괄하는 7개의 앨범을 발표했고 사운드트랙, 패션쇼, 컨템포러리 댄스, 연극 등 다양한 장르에서 자신만의 음악적 장치들과 퍼포먼스 툴을 이용한 공연들을 선보여왔다. 2005년부터 네덜란드에 거주하며 실험적인 전자악기 연구개발 기관인 스타임에서 하드웨어 엔지니어로 일하다가 2011년 귀국하여 프리랜서 음악인 및 관련 하드웨어 연구/개발자로 활동하고 있다. 현재 서강대학교 영상대학원 겸임교수로 재직 중이다. 그는 특히 임민욱, 김성환 등의 작가들의 작업의 주요 퍼포머로서 자주 등장해 왔는데, 때문에 동시대 미술 작가들의 작품 내에서 특별한 페르소나적 위상을 가지고 있기도 하다. 이번 전시에서는 3층 공간을 사운드 실험실로 삼아 자신의 다양한 작업들을 모으고 새로운 재료 삼아 다양한 요소가 공존하는 설치를 보여준다. 그러나 시간적으로 소리들이 서로 겹쳐지지 않도록 순차적으로 관람하게 디자인함으로써 결국 이 방은 15분 정도의 총체극처럼 따라가야 하는 작업이 된다. 이 방은 자신의 개인 작업뿐 아니라 협업에 의한 작업들이 함께 모여 권병준이 지닌 다양한 면모들을 드러내는 흥미로운 개인 아카이브이기도 하다.

Kwon Byungjun, a musician and sound artist, has recently been producing a range of audio works while researching the sounds produced by various sources and implements. He began creating music as a singer/songwriter in the early nineties and has produced seven albums that span the genres of alternative rock and minimal house music; he has also utilized his own musical installations and performance tools in soundtracks, fashion shows, contemporary dance, and theater. In 2005 he began working as a hardware engineer for the electronic instrument research and development institution, STEIM, in the Netherlands. He returned to Korea in 2011 and has since been working as a freelance musician and hardware researcher/developer and also serves as an adjunct professor at the Sogang University Graduate School of Media. He has developed a particular persona through his frequent appearances in major performances by artists including Lim Minouk and Kim Sung Hwan. In this exhibition he has made the third-floor space into a sound lab, creating an installation that brings his diverse works together with new sources and materials. However, through installing is works sequentially so that their sounds do not overlap, the artist has created a work that can be viewed as a roughly 15-minute-long gesamtkunstwerk. This room displays not only the artist's independent works but also his collaborative projects, creating a fascinating archive revealing the many faces of Kwon Byungjun.

<포터블 키퍼>는 작가 임민욱의 작품으로, 퍼포먼스와 오브제 설치 그리고 기록영상으로 구성되어 있다. 버려진 필기도구 묶음과 새 깃털, 인조모피, 그리고 선풍기 팬으로 구성된 ‘Portable Keeper’라는 제목을 붙인 오브제를 제작한 후 이것을 들고 이동하면서 재개발 지역의 풍경을 담은 퍼포먼스 비디오 작품이다. 음악가 권병준이 퍼포머로서 등장하여 막대를 어깨에 메거나 전선줄을 향해 높이 쳐드는 행위 등을 하거나 뉴타운 계획에 의해 폐쇄된-그러나 여전히 나름대로 생존해 나가는 상업, 주거 공간들 사이를 연결하며 산보한다.

Portable Keeper, a work by artist Lim Minouk, consists of performance, object installation, and documentary recording. After creating an object called the “Portable Keeper”—which consists of bundles of discarded writing tools, bird feathers, faux fur, and parts of electric fans—the artist produced a video of a performer carrying the implement through an area undergoing redevelopment. Kwon Byungjun appears here as the performer, carrying the device on his shoulder, raising it towards electric cables, and wandering between areas abandoned due to new-town planning and areas that still survive as commercial and residential spaces.

<우렁각시>는 남몰래 밥을 해놓고 사라지는 우렁각시 설화를 현대적으로 각색한 저예산 디지털 영화로 과장되고 키치적인 요소가 넘치는 판타지물이다. 주윤발을 동경하며 ‘뒷거래 철공소’에서 불법으로 총을 만들어 파는 주인공 청년 건태 역할로 권병준이 배우로 출연한 영화이다.

Snail Bride is a fantasy that takes the Korean fable of The Snail Bride, a figure who secretly prepares food for a farmer but disappears, and recreates it as a low-budget digital film with many elements of kitsch. Kwon Byungjun appears as the main character, a young man who longs for actor Cho Yun-Fat and illegally manufactures and sells guns in the “Secret Foundry.”

이 작업은 부다페스트에서 있었던 한국 현대 사진전의 오프닝에서 선보였던 퍼포먼스로, 권병준과 윤사비의 공동 작업이다. 당시 북한의 미사일 발사 위협 등의 분위기로부터 미사일이 한국에 대한 복합적 맥락을 보여주는 상징물이라는 점에 착안하여 진행된 작업이다. 빵으로 된 미사일을 제작한 후, 오픈 당일에는 제작 과정을 기록한 영상과 설치된 미사일을 배경으로 퍼포먼스가 진행되었다.

This work is a performance that Kwon Byungjun and Yun Sabi enacted together at the opening of a modern Korean photography exhibition in Budapest. The work was created based on the idea of the missile as a symbol of Korea’s complex context, with North Korea having recently threatened missile launch. After creating a missile out of bread, the two staged a performance on the opening day of the exhibition in front of the missile and a film recording the process of its making.

After creating a drawing program using music composition programming tools, the artist used the program to produce a combination of live drawings and animation.

피에조 카메라라는 기계를 가지고 직접 새로운 도구를 만든 후 그로부터 작동된 결과들을 보여주는 작업. 기계를 통해 글씨 쓰는 소리는 빛으로 전환되고 그 빛은 다시 그 글씨의 형태를 비추게 되는 이 작업은 영상과 소리가 증폭/변조되어 새로운 형태로 관객에게 전달된다. 전시장에는 그 결과로 남겨진 물감 드로잉들과 그 기계의 원리와 실행을 보여주는 영상이 소개된다.

This work shows the outcome of a device the artist made by altering a Piezo camera. The machine produces handwriting, the sounds of which are converted into light and then used to again project the shape of the writing. This work amplifies and modulates images and sound and conveys them to the viewer in a new form. On display in the exhibition hall is a film showing the machine’s formation, operation, and the resultant drawings.

2011년 LIG 아트센터에서 음악가 달파란과 함께 작업한 공연으로, 큰 인형에게 제어 당하는 작은 인형들의 이야기를 담고 있다. 6개의 마네킹은 모두 같은 모습으로 복제되다시피 하는 아이돌 현상을 빗댄 것으로, 공연 중에 마네킹의 몸이 분해되면서 서로 다른 소리와 이야기로 변화해간다.

This performance, made in collaboration with musician Dalpalan in 2011 at the LIG center, tells the story of small puppets who are under the control of a large puppet. An allusion to the idol phenomenon—the mannequins are all reproductions of the same image—the mannequins’ voices and stories change as their bodies disassemble during the course of the performance.
